You
might assume that if you have breast cancer, that you can't really go
on holiday – maybe a weekend to Cornwall, but a fortnight in the
Caribbean is off the list. Well, that's not true, providing your
cancer and treatment are relatively stable, you can take your two
weeks in the sun. Sure, some holidays might be out of the question –
white water rafting in the Nile, for instance – but a nice,
traditional, holiday is more than possible.

Why An Expat Needs Insurance When Returning To The Uk
It is not normally easy to get travel insurance outside UK if you are
already abroad or living there. To
obtain cover you will have to find a specialist insurance company on the
internet.
If you are an ex-pat and plan to travel to
the United Kingdom you would benefit from having medical cover. This may sound strange with the National
Health free at the point of service. However if you have not lived in your own
country for a while you may find that you will be charged should you end up in
hospital.
You would have to have been back for six
months to be eligible to have treatment under the free National Health
Service. I know this because a friend of
mine became ill and they would not treat her because she only had been back for
four months or so to look after her terminally ill sister.
It is especially important to get cover if
you are of advanced age and have a medical condition. Your illness may be well managed by modern
medicines, but a change of climate or diet may put your system out of kilter.
For these kinds of cases there are also
companies that will insure you for your trip, even if you have cancer, diabetes
or heart problems.
Together with this type of cover you may
want to add other bits of insurance such as cancellation, lost luggage or lost
property.
I have been an expat now for 9 years. There are many of us who for one reason or
another choose to move to another sunnier country for financial reasons. Many Britons who moved to Spain are now keen
to move back home because of the dire property crisis. Many assume that they can pick up NHS care as
they have paid their stamp all their lives.
If you have had health issues in the
country you are currently residing and you are covered by insurance there, it
does not automatically mean that you can re-register with a doctor easily. Unfortunately, because so many non-British
travellers come specifically to our country for costly medical procedures, the
loopholes have been stopped.
